Aberkyn is founded on the belief that transformations accelerate and prevail only when performance focus (business side) and organizational health (human side) are fully integrated.
Our story began in the late 1990s, when Michael Rennie, a young partner at McKinsey & Company, became convinced that more conscious leadership was the key to making organizations more human and unlock performance. Together, it made organizations a force for good in the world.
Michael pioneered work with clients and built a team with facilitators of transformation across the world. Their approach got deepened by working with Gita Bellin, a leading facilitator of personal transformation. The group further expanded their thinking through the Global Dialog Interview Project joining forces with Michael Jung, Otto Scharmer and Joseph Jaworski – tapping into thought leaders around the world about their ideas about the future of organization, leadership and transformation. These strands together formed the foundation of Aberkyn.
Aberkyn itself came into being in 2012, when two McKinsey & Company partners joined forces with nine facilitators of transformation to found a new organization. Drawing on nature and the wilderness as sources of energy and inspiration, we developed ways of working that blend ancient wisdom with modern scientific thought and practical knowhow. We tested our new methods with forward-thinking leaders who were keen to explore holistic approaches to developing their organizations.
In 2017, Aberkyn’s by now flourishing community of facilitators was integrated into McKinsey & Company. Being part of the world’s leading management consulting firm enables us to work on transformations that are more complex and challenging, and work with the leaders of the most prominent institutions of the world on change that matters.
Aberkyn’s origins can be traced back 25 years to a young McKinsey & Company partner who had recovered from cancer and attributed an important part of his cure to meditation. This experience transformed his professional outlook. Working with leading a in transformational change, he developed an approach that integrated the hard and soft side of business transformations: performance improvement and the human side of change.
